What is the dMAT Exam?
The Digital Master Assessment Test (dMAT) is a standardized academic aptitude test developed by g.a.s.t. (Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development) in cooperation with German universities, including the University of Ulm and University of Kassel. The test was originally supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
From 2026 onwards, the dMAT is introduced as an additional requirement in the APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) verification process for eligible Indian graduates applying for master’s programs in Germany.
Who Needs to Take the dMAT?
The dMAT requirement applies to students who:
- Are applying for a Master's degree in Germany.
- Intend to begin their studies in the Summer Semester 2027 or later.
- Need an APS certificate.
Have a bachelor’s degree in any of the following subjects:
- Engineering
- Business & Management
- Commerce
- Accounting
- Finance
- Economics
Students from Nepal can also take the dMAT at the designated test centre.
Why is the dMAT Required?
dMAT assesses whether candidates have the analytical and cognitive skills needed for graduate-level studies in German universities and APS.
Unlike conventional entry exams, dMAT emphasizes application skills over rote memorization.
dMAT Exam Pattern
The dMAT consists of two modules:
01. Core Module
This section evaluates your general academic aptitude through three sub-tests assessing:
- Cognitive ability
- Logical reasoning
- Analytical thinking
02. General Academic Module
This module assesses your ability to solve academic problems by applying concepts and analytical skills. Questions are based on practical scenarios rather than rote learning.
For university-specific programs, additional subject-specific modules are also available in areas such as:

Test duration is 3.5 hours and is conducted in English language including one break between two modules.

Registration, payment, technical assistance, issuing certificates, and test center registration all happen through g.a.s.t.
How is the dMAT Certificate Used?
After the results are declared, g.a.s.t. issues the official dMAT certificate.
The certificate must be submitted along with your APS application documents, and your APS certificate will also reference your dMAT result.
Your score is reported in two ways:
- Percentile Rank – This indicates how well you performed relative to other test takers.
- dMAT Score (0–200) – A standardized score that enables the universities to compare candidates fairly.
The certificate does not expire and each university uses the score independently.
Which Universities Use the dMAT?
Currently, the following German universities use the dMAT as part of their admission process for selected programs:
- RWTH Aachen University – M.Sc. Battery Science and Technology in Engineering
- University of Göttingen – M.Sc. Data Science
As more universities adopt the dMAT, additional subject-specific modules may be introduced.
