Thick Web Switch Expansion Joint (TWSEJ)
Category: Advanced Fittings
The TWSEJ (Thick Web Switch Expansion Joint) is a hybrid component that utilizes the structural advantages of the Thick Web Switch design specifically for the purpose of managing expansion in Long Welded Rails. It is essentially an ISEJ that has been “beefed up” with thick web technology. This allows the joint to handle much higher axle loads and higher speeds without the risk of the tongue rail flexing or “hunting” under the pressure of the train wheels. In a TWSEJ, the sliding components are far more robust, making them ideal for use in modern concrete-sleeper tracks where the track modulus is high. The thick web design ensures that even at the maximum expansion or contraction limits, the joint maintains a high degree of lateral rigidity. This is critical for maintaining the “gauge” (the distance between rails) within very tight tolerances. The TWSEJ is often used in conjunction with high-speed passenger lines where “ride quality” and passenger comfort are prioritized, as it eliminates the vertical “dip” often associated with lighter expansion joints.
