The Thick Web Switch (TWS)
Category: Advanced Fittings
The Thick Web Switch (TWS) is a modern high-performance turnout component designed to replace the traditional thin-web tongue rails. In a TWS, the web of the tongue rail is manufactured with a significantly larger cross-section, providing much higher inherent stiƯness and structural strength. This design is particularly advantageous for high-speed rail networks (exceeding 160 km/h) and heavy-freight corridors where traditional switches would suƯer from rapid wear or deformation. One of the primary engineering benefits of the TWS is that it allows for the removal of the “joggle” in the stock rail. In traditional switches, the stock rail has to be bent or “joggled” to accommodate the thin tip of the tongue rail; in a TWS system, the stock rail remains straight, which improves the overall stability of the turnout. The increased mass of the thick web also helps in dampening vibrations and provides a larger contact area for the wheel, resulting in a smoother ride and significantly reduced maintenance costs over the lifecycle of the track.
